Post Surgical Rehabilitation Q & A
What is postsurgical rehabilitation?
Postsurgical rehabilitation is a type of physical therapy that strives to restore the normal function of your damaged joints, muscles, tendons, or ligaments after surgery. It’s important that you begin regaining flexibility and mobility throughout your recovery process.
Postsurgical rehabilitation can help accelerate this healing process while preventing reinjury in a safe manner.
What can I expect from postsurgical rehabilitation?
In general, postsurgical rehabilitation is a three-step process:
Your postsurgical rehabilitation starts immediately after surgery. Depending on the type of surgery you’ve had done, Dr. Vickers and his team can educate you on the best way to sleep, bathe, get dressed, and move after surgery to aid in your recovery. You may also be instructed to get up and move around, try heat and ice therapy, and more during this initial postoperative period.
It’s important that Dr. Vickers has a chance to evaluate you before and after surgery to determine the right postsurgical rehabilitation plan for you. Dr. Vickers will design a plan that involves progressive exercises that improve your range of motion, balance and stability, mobility, strength, and flexibility.
Once Dr. Vickers designs your postoperative plan, it’s crucial that you stick to it. While your surgery may only last a few hours, it can take up to a year or more for you to recover. A postsurgical rehabilitation plan helps accelerate your recovery, but your plan will be most effective if you regularly meet with Dr. Vickers and complete your at-home exercises.
